Automation / Tool alternatives

n8n is a good tool. It is also one you often have to host, update and watch yourself. If that is more work than you want, or you simply want a second opinion before committing, these are the three platforms freelancers most often compare it with: Make, Latenode and Pabbly Connect.

This is a buyer’s guide, not a ranking. The right tool depends on how many runs you need, how complex your workflows are and who will maintain them.

The short answer

Choose Make if you want the easiest path to a working automation. It is visual, widely used and easy to hand over to a client or assistant.

Choose Latenode if your workflows need code or AI steps and you would rather pay for processing time than for every step.

Choose Pabbly Connect if budget is the main constraint, or if a one-time payment appeals more than a monthly bill. Test it on the free plan first.

Stay with n8n if you want full control and are comfortable running it.

The three tools side by side

Figures come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked in October 2026. Prices and limits change, so confirm them before you buy.

Make: the default for most freelancers

Make’s visual canvas shows what each step does, which makes workflows easy to explain to a client. The free plan is enough to build and test a first scenario. The main thing to watch is credit usage: a workflow that loops over many items can use credits faster than you expect.

Best for: client onboarding, lead routing, invoice reminders and any workflow built from popular apps.

Latenode: when you need code or AI inside the workflow

Latenode bills for processing time, so a long chain of cheap steps costs about the same as one expensive step. That can be easier to predict if your workflows are heavy on logic. It lets you write JavaScript in any node and includes an AI agent node. The free plan limits a run to 3 minutes, which rules out some long jobs.

Best for: workflows that transform data, call APIs or use AI models, and builders comfortable with a little code.

Pabbly Connect: the budget option

Pabbly counts only action steps as tasks, so filters and routers do not use your allowance. It also sells lifetime plans: one payment instead of a monthly bill. Read the terms before you buy one. Its own pricing page says a lifetime plan cannot be upgraded later, and support is listed for one year. Start on the free plan and check that the interface and the apps you need work for you.

Best for: simple, high-volume automations on a tight budget.

Five questions to ask before you choose

  1. How many runs a month? Multiply workflows by how often each runs. This number matters more than the headline price.
  2. How many steps per run? Per-step billing (Make credits, Pabbly tasks) grows with steps. Time-based billing (Latenode) grows with processing time.
  3. Do you need code or AI? If yes, check that the free plan allows it before you build anything.
  4. Who will maintain it? A workflow only you understand becomes a risk. Pick the tool you can explain to someone else.
  5. What client data passes through? If a workflow handles personal data, check the vendor’s data processing terms and tell the client. Our AI policy template and the guide on telling clients you use AI cover the wording.

Our take

Start with Make unless you already know you need code, AI steps or the lowest possible price. Build one small workflow, run it for a month, and count what it actually used. Then decide whether to stay, switch or self-host with n8n. For a direct comparison of the two most common choices, read n8n vs Make for freelancers, or browse our automation tools overview.
